Argentina's Naval Prefecture Nabs Trawler 'Coimbra' for Illegal Fishing Activities
In a decisive action, the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA) has successfully identified the vessel 'Coimbra' for engaging in unauthorized fishing activities within Argentina's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This significant detection was facilitated by the advanced capabilities of the Coast Guard System. The 'Coimbra' had set sail from Uruguay on February 25, 2026, and was intercepted close to Cabo Dos Bahías in the Chubut province. Experts from the security forces noted that the trawler exhibited suspicious navigation patterns while cruising at an average speed of 4.9 knots, a rate more indicative of trawling operations than that of 'innocent passage.' This behavior points to a potential violation of the Federal Fisheries Regime currently in place. Notably, under new regulations enacted in February, electronic evidence collected during such monitoring is now legally admissible for penalizing infringements, eliminating the necessity for physical boarding of the vessel.
