In light of this decision, the state plans to reassign the 62 crew members of the ferry to other vessels within the fleet. However, concerns have been raised among ferry workers regarding the implications of ongoing budget cuts, which could hinder the marine highway's fundamental mission of fostering community connections as the fleet continues to dwindle. This year, the legislature allocated approximately $40 million less to the ferry system compared to the previous year, intensifying worries about the long-term sustainability of this vital transportation network.

The ferry 'Columbia' has returned to service as of May 16, following repair work conducted in Juneau. Initially scheduled to depart from Ketchikan by May 12, the ship faced delays due to incomplete repairs. Fortunately, a technician from the engine manufacturer managed to implement a temporary solution, allowing the US Coast Guard to approve the vessel for operation once more. Additional repairs are anticipated throughout the summer when spare parts become accessible, ensuring the ferry remains in top condition for passengers.

On the evening of May 7, 2019, at 9 p.m., the ferry 'Columbia' experienced a significant mechanical failure while traveling from Sitka to Petersburg. As the vessel navigated the Peril Strait, it faced engine troubles that prompted the captain to make the decision to shut down one of its engines. This unfortunate incident left passengers momentarily stranded in Juneau as the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) worked diligently to diagnose the problem. The captain opted to return to Juneau, citing that repairs would be more manageable there compared to Petersburg. In the meantime, arrangements were made with the 'Malaspina' ferry to provide an alternative transportation option for travelers. To further assess the situation, a technician was called to troubleshoot the issues with the 'Columbia'.
