In a notable maritime incident on October 6, 2016, a barge owned by Channel Construction, transporting sand and gravel, capsized while being towed by the tug 'Columbia Layne'. The event occurred as the vessel journeyed from Seattle to Juneau through British Columbia's Inside Passage, specifically near Bella Bella. The unfortunate rollover was triggered by a shift in cargo, leading the barge to take on water. Fortunately, all four crew members aboard the 'Columbia Layne' were unharmed, and there was no immediate threat of environmental contamination. The barge sank amidst challenging weather conditions, facing high swells at a depth of 550 feet.
