Storm Goretti Causes Container Loss for Two Ships Off Isle of Wight

Jan 12, 2026 10:16

On January 8, 2026, severe weather conditions associated with Storm Goretti led two vessels to lose containers off the coast of the Isle of Wight. The incidents involved the Liberian-flagged reefer 'Lombok Strait' (IMO: 9204958), which was making its way from Portsmouth, UK, to Bridgetown with an estimated arrival time of January 18, and the 'Condor Valparaiso', en route from Antwerp to Aviles with an expected arrival on January 11. Within the span of an hour, both ships reported incidents of container loss in close proximity to one another. The first issue arose around 11:00 p.m. when the 'Condor Valparaiso', navigating through the southbound traffic separation scheme, reported losing seven empty containers approximately 16 nautical miles south of St Catherine’s Point. Meanwhile, at approximately 6:30 a.m., the 'Lombok Strait' also reported that it had lost 25 containers during its voyage. The HM Coastguard has been actively monitoring these events. In response to the situation, a fixed-wing aircraft launched from Newquay Airport at 10 a.m. aimed at locating the lost containers. Mariners and the public are encouraged to report any sightings of the floating containers to the Solent Coastguard by calling 0344 382 0560 or using VHF radio communications. Further search efforts continued on January 10, with the fixed-wing aircraft successfully identifying up to seven containers from the 'Condor Valparaiso' drifting southeast of the Isle of Wight, while it is believed that the containers lost by the 'Lombok Strait' have now sunk. The maritime community remains vigilant as recovery operations are underway in these British territorial waters.

Incident in Antwerp: Condor Valparaiso Allides with Boudewijn Lock

Jun 18, 2018 12:43

On June 18, 2018, the Port of Antwerp experienced a notable maritime incident involving the vessel 'Condor Valparaiso', which had set sail from Hamburg. In the morning hours, the ship failed to stop in time and collided with a gate at the Boudewijn lock located on the canal's southern side. This unfortunate allision temporarily rendered the lock inoperative.
