Containerships Marks Milestone with Delivery of Second LNG-Powered Vessel
In an impressive step forward for eco-friendly shipping, CMA CGM's subsidiary, Containerships, has officially welcomed its second LNG-fueled container ship, the CONTAINER SHIPS POLAR. This state-of-the-art vessel began its journey in early May, departing from the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China en route to Northern Europe. Currently, the CONTAINER SHIPS POLAR is actively operational, joining its sister ship, the CONTAINERSHIP NORD, on the revamped BALT 2 service. Notably, the ship's inaugural LNG bunkering is slated for the end of June in Rotterdam, where it will receive around 200 metric tons of LNG through a ship-to-ship refueling process. This innovative approach underscores the industry's commitment to sustainable shipping practices, aligning with global efforts to reduce emissions.
Historic Arrival: Malta Freeport Welcomes First LNG-Powered Container Vessel
Malta Freeport Terminals marked a significant milestone by hosting its first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ship during an inaugural journey from Asia to Rotterdam. This notable occasion was celebrated by Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, who oversees the Freeport Authority, as he toured the mv Containerships Polar and acknowledged the importance of this development. According to a press release from the Malta Freeport Authority, the vessel successfully discharged over 560 containers during its stay in Malta. Operated by a subsidiary of the prominent shipping company CMA CGM, the Containerships Polar is the second vessel in a series of four LNG-powered ships introduced by the company. The adoption of LNG as fuel is gaining traction in the maritime industry due to its capacity to cut sulphur oxide emissions by 90 to 95 percent, alongside offering cost-saving benefits.
