Working Conditions Aboard the Continental

On September 24, 2018, at 09:52 AM, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay crew mobilized the lifeboat "Spirit of Round Table II" in response to an urgent medical request from the bulk carrier "Continental." The vessel was approximately 10 nautical miles off the coast, with a Scandinavian crew member experiencing severe abdominal pain. Upon reaching the location, about four miles from Richards Bay, an NSRI paramedic and extraction team boarded the ship to assess and stabilize the patient. Once stabilized, the individual was safely transferred onto the lifeboat using a man basket. Accompanied by an interpreter for communication, the patient was then transported to the NSRI sea rescue base and subsequently taken to a local hospital via Ice Medical ambulance services, where he received further treatment in stable condition.
