On March 16, 2014, the container vessel 'Tongan', en route from Hamburg to Fredericia, experienced a troubling incident while anchored at the NE anchorage off Brunsbüttel on the Elbe River. As the ship awaited authorization to transit the Kiel Canal, it began to drag its anchor around 5:30 p.m., causing crew members to realize that the vessel was drifting dangerously close to the shore. In a bid to avert disaster, the crew dropped a second anchor and activated the main engine. They also summoned a tugboat for immediate assistance. Unfortunately, these efforts were insufficient to prevent the ship from colliding with a buoy and running aground on a shallow area. Thanks to the timely intervention of the tugboat, the 'Tongan' was successfully refloated and subsequently underwent a detailed inspection at the scene. Due to the incident, a comprehensive investigation was mandated, and the vessel was directed to berth at Voith Quay in Kiel on March 17 at 10:15 a.m. Following a thorough assessment by surveyors, who confirmed the ship's seaworthiness, the 'Tongan' resumed its journey around 7 p.m. that same day.
