Distressed Finnish Yacht Rescued with Help from Norgas Invention

May 11, 2012 09:14

In a remarkable display of maritime collaboration, the Falmouth Coastguard sprang into action on May 10, 2012, after receiving an urgent call from MRCC Turku, Finland. Early that morning at 06:30 a.m., authorities were alerted to a crisis involving two sailors aboard a 35-foot Finnish registered yacht that had departed from the Azores on May 7. At the time of the incident, the distressed vessel was positioned approximately 840 nautical miles from the Isles of Scilly. Falmouth Coastguard quickly took charge of the situation, coordinating the search and rescue efforts. They initiated an emergency broadcast using the Enhanced Group Call (EGC) system, reaching out to nearby vessels for assistance. The response was swift, with several commercial ships offering their support. Among those vessels were the tankers "Stolt Invention" and "Norgas Invention." With the latter actively en route from Port Arthur to Stenungsund, the Coastguard directed both tankers to divert to the yacht's last known coordinates. In a further step to enhance the operation, the ARCC Kinloss organized for a VC10 aircraft from RAF Brize Norton to conduct surveillance and establish a communication link with Falmouth Coastguard. As the sailors activated their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), the Coastguard was able to pinpoint the yacht's location with precision. With the "Norgas Invention" anticipated to reach the stranded sailors within a couple of hours, hopes were high for a successful rescue, showcasing the importance of maritime safety and cooperation.
