Medical Emergency at Sea: Corvette's Quick Diversion to Bermuda
On September 20, 2016, the LPG tanker 'Corvette' made an urgent diversion to Bermuda to address a medical emergency concerning a crew member. The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a critical notification at 1:30 p.m. from Meyer Shipping Agency, indicating that a Filipino crew member onboard had been experiencing severe coughing episodes since joining the vessel, with no visible improvement despite treatment and advice sought from medical professionals ashore. Approximately 64 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, the 'Corvette' altered its course from its original trajectory from Port Arthur to Tarragona for a timely patient disembarkation. By 6:00 p.m., the crew member was successfully transferred to the pilot boat 'St. David' and subsequently taken to Ordnance Island. An ambulance was on hand to transport the individual to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further medical attention, ensuring that the crew member received necessary care without delay.
Innovative Scrubber Technology Installed on ECO VLGC Corvette
The ECO VLGC Corvette, a state-of-the-art gas carrier, was officially delivered by Hyundai Heavy Industries on January 2, 2015. This vessel is equipped with a cutting-edge exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS), approved by both Class and Flag State, courtesy of Clean Marine. Notably, the emissions from the Corvette have been rigorously tested, demonstrating compliance with the measures outlined in MEPC guideline 184(59). With the implementation of this technology, the vessel effectively meets the stringent 0.1% sulphur content requirement in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), a regulation that has been in effect since January 1, 2015. Furthermore, the Corvette surpasses the U.S. EPA's stringent standards, ensuring the washwater's pH remains above 6 at its outlet. On January 8, 2015, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)—acting on behalf of the Bahamas Flag—issued an official confirmation letter verifying that the installed EGCS adheres to the “Scheme B – EGC System Approval, Survey and Certification Using Continuous Monitoring of SOx Emissions,” as stipulated by the IMO Resolution MEPC.184(59), 2009 Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. This approved system allows the new Dorian LPG vessel to maintain compliance with existing and anticipated sulfur emissions regulations without incurring the added cost of switching to higher-priced fuels, according to Clean Marine.
