COSCO Welcomes New 13,386-TEU Vessel to Enhance Asia-Europe Operations

May 17, 2014 11:45

In a significant addition to its fleet, COSCO has officially welcomed the Cosco Italy, a 13,386-TEU container ship, marking the sixth delivery from a series of eight ordered back in May 2008 at Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co (NACKS) for $166.8 million each. Following a crucial bunkering operation in Russia, the Cosco Italy is set to reinforce COSCO's CKYHE Asia-Europe loop 3 (NE 3) service. This new vessel arrives shortly after the earlier delivery of its sister ship, the Cosco Spain, in January. NACKS, a collaboration between COSCO and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, has a history of producing high-capacity vessels; they previously constructed a fleet of four 9,850-TEU ships for COSCO's Oceania series in 2008, according to Alphaliner. Notably, these latest 13,386-TEU ships experienced a delay of roughly 12 months due to the repercussions of the September 2008 financial crisis. Designed as post-Panamax ships, they provide the capacity to stow 20 rows of containers on deck, surpassing the maximum of 19 rows allowed by the new Panama Canal locks.
