Cosco Pride Experiences Engine Failure in English Channel

Jun 28, 2017 19:13

On June 27, 2017, the mega container ship 'Cosco Pride' encountered an engine malfunction around midnight while navigating the English Channel. The vessel had embarked from Felixstowe at 12:30 p.m. and was en route to Southampton when the incident occurred. Following the engine failure, the 'Cosco Pride' was anchored at the coordinates 50 33N 000 05W, where it remained through the evening of June 28. Cosco Pride Container Ship Mitigates Fire Incident Near Brunsbuettel

Jul 13, 2014 11:15

In the early hours of Sunday, July 13, 2014, a fire incident occurred aboard the container ship 'Cosco Pride' in the Lower Elbe, close to Brunsbuettel. Fortunately, the ship's crew acted promptly, extinguishing the fire before emergency services from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Society (DGzRS) arrived on the scene. The blaze broke out in an open container located at the vessel's stern. Emergency response efforts included the deployment of eight firefighters from Cuxhaven, who were transported on the DGzRS rescue vessel HERMANN HELMS to the scene. However, by the time they reached the 'Cosco Pride', the crew had successfully contained the situation. With favorable weather and sea conditions facilitating a swift response, the rescue cruiser HERMANN HELMS approached the massive 366-meter-long vessel, allowing the firefighters to board and verify that the fire was fully extinguished. Following these inspections, the 'Cosco Pride' resumed its journey towards the North Sea without any reported injuries among the crew. This incident underscores the importance of crew preparedness and quick action in emergency situations at sea.

Samskip Ends Whale Product Transport, Shipment to Return to Iceland

Jul 12, 2013 10:24

In a significant shift, the Icelandic shipping firm Samskip has announced that it will cease the transportation of whale meat from Iceland to Europe. The decision comes after a controversial shipment of whale meat remained stranded in Hamburg following its unloading from the COSCO Pride. Despite successful whale hunting since June, the logistics of moving the meat to Asian markets have encountered substantial hurdles. Notably, Greenpeace activists staged protests in Hamburg coinciding with the arrival of containers filled with whale products from Iceland, prompting customs officials to inspect the shipment. Although a transport permit was eventually issued, the ship had already embarked on its journey, necessitating the search for an alternative vessel. In an escalated act of protest, Greenpeace members even chained themselves to the replacement ship. In light of these developments, the German Minister of the Environment urged port authorities to impose a ban on all whale product transportation through German facilities. Following this pressure, Evergreen Line has opted to return the whale products to Samskip, which will facilitate their return to Iceland. Reliable sources indicate that Samskip's commitment to no longer transport whale products to Europe marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate surrounding whaling activities.
