On March 29, 2018, the 'Cosco Shipping Leo,' a newly launched Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS) from COSCO, encountered a serious incident during its sea trials in the East China Sea. With 150 crew members aboard, the vessel collided with the 'Mercury Triumph,' a cargo ship that was making its way from Tobata to China carrying a load of steel. The collision occurred approximately 50 miles south of Seogwipo, situated in the southern region of Jeju. Following the crash, the 'Mercury Triumph' suffered significant hull breaches, leading to water ingress in its ballast tanks, ultimately causing it to become disabled and adrift. Meanwhile, the 'Cosco Shipping Leo' sustained damage to its starboard bow, including dented hull plating and the loss of its anchor. The ULCS had begun its trials just two days prior, departing from Nantong on March 27, and this incident raises concerns about maritime safety protocols during vessel testing operations.
