In a remarkable event for the maritime community, the Port of Hamburg welcomed the 'Cosco Shipping Universe' during its inaugural voyage on July 19, 2023. On Tuesday morning, China celebrated the official transfer of its largest container ship, the Costco Shipping Universe, to its new owners. This massive vessel, engineered by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), boasts an impressive capacity of 21,237 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). According to a report from China Central Television, the ship now belongs to China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited. Measuring 400 metres in length and 58.6 metres in width, the Costco Shipping Universe can cruise at speeds of 22 nautical miles per hour (25.3 miles per hour) and has a hefty cargo capacity of up to 198,000 tonnes. China COSCO Shipping will soon welcome five additional container ships with capacities of 21,000 TEU and four more ships featuring 22,000 TEU capacities, scheduled for delivery between the end of 2019 and early 2020. This mammoth ship is set to navigate the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, a vital trade route linking the Chinese coastline to Europe and Africa, traversing the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. The Costco Shipping Universe is expected to serve as a flagship for this essential maritime pathway while supporting China's Belt and Road Initiative, introduced by President Xi Jinping in 2013 to enhance trade connectivity across approximately 70 countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
