Incident of Container Loss Near Cap de La Hague
On January 27, 2014, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Costa Rican Star' alerted CROSS Joburg about the loss of two empty containers during its voyage. The reefer ship was situated to the west of the Caskets traffic separation scheme, approximately 50 nautical miles from Cap de la Hague in the Cotentin region. In response to this incident, CROSS Joburg promptly notified other vessels operating in the vicinity, while the maritime prefecture issued an urgent mariners' notice. To further investigate the situation, the Maritime Operations Centre dispatched an EC 225 helicopter from the French Navy base in Maupertus. Thanks to the vessel's precise initial position report, the helicopter crew was able to quickly locate the two containers and used tagging to allow the maritime prefecture to track them in real time, helping to prevent potential collisions. However, around 6:20 p.m., the tracking beacons ceased functioning, indicating a high probability that the containers had sunk. The 'Costa Rican Star', which had departed Dakar on January 21, was en route to Antwerp, expected to arrive on January 28. Instead, it docked at Dover on January 27 at 10:20 p.m. and set sail again on January 28 at 1:50 p.m., before finally reaching the Vrasen Dock in Antwerp on January 29 at 4:30 a.m. For further details, you can view the French report with accompanying photographs here: http://www.premar-manche.gouv.fr/actualites-communiques-presse/marquage-deux-conteneurs-perdus-manche.html
