On December 30, 2019, the cargo ship 'Cote d’Ivoirian' encountered an unexpected challenge while transporting bananas from Dakar to Portsmouth. The vessel struck a whale on its journey, leading to an emergency response that halted its progress. Following the incident, which occurred off the east coast of the Isle of Wight, the ship anchored in the area early in the morning. Despite efforts to navigate safely, the whale remained tragically attached to the bow of the ship as the crew issued a distress signal to the Coastguard at approximately 9 a.m. In response to the situation, both the receiver of wreck and counter pollution teams were promptly informed to monitor the unfolding events. After being stranded for nearly seven hours, the 'Cote d’Ivoirian' was finally escorted into port by three tugs. The vessel successfully docked at Portsmouth International Port around 6:40 p.m., where it was received by the council-owned fruit handling company, Portico.
