In a remarkable rescue operation, the crew of the bulk carrier 'Crinis' successfully located a missing passenger from the cruise ship 'Carnival Valor' who had spent nearly a full day treading water. The incident occurred approximately 20 miles off Southwest Pass, Louisiana, during the night of November 24, 2022. The 28-year-old man was on a voyage to Cozumel, Mexico, with his sister when he went overboard while using the restroom around 11 p.m. on November 23. His sister reported him missing the next day around noon after she did not hear from him, prompting the crew of 'Carnival Valor' to immediately notify the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard responded swiftly, launching rescue operations at approximately 2:30 p.m. from their Sector New Orleans. An MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew was dispatched from the New Orleans air station, along with a 45-foot response boat from the Venice station and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft. 'Carnival Valor' also retraced its route to facilitate the search, issuing a UMIB alert for nearby vessels to assist in the lookout. Fortunately, the crew of 'Crinis', which was en route to New Orleans, spotted the young man in the water and directed the Coast Guard to his location. The rescue was completed at 8:25 p.m., with the helicopter crew hoisting the passenger onboard and transporting him to emergency medical services at New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Fortunately, he was reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital, marking a successful end to this harrowing incident.
