Recognition for Heroic Rescue by Crown Sapphire Crew at Lloyds List Global Awards

Oct 22, 2014 13:46

The maritime community has once again underscored its commitment to the age-old duty of aiding those in peril at sea, as highlighted by the prestigious Lloyds List Global Awards held in London on September 30. During this illustrious event, the crew of the specialized reefer vessel, Crown Sapphire, was honored with the Amver Assisted Rescue at Sea Award. Their commendable efforts to rescue two sailors stranded in a yacht within the tumultuous waters of the Atlantic Ocean back in March 2014 were the focus of this accolade. Under the capable command of Captain Wig, who boasts nearly 25 years of experience at the helm, the crew undertook a daring endeavor in harsh weather conditions. Upon receiving an emergency alert regarding the distressed sailing vessel, Captain Wig promptly issued the command to adjust the Crown Sapphire's course to navigate towards the stranded yacht. Despite facing challenging maritime weather, he expertly maneuvered the vessel into a secure position to facilitate the rescue operation, showcasing remarkable seamanship. The crew of the Crown Sapphire had systematically prepared the necessary rescue equipment, which enabled them to execute a successful retrieval of the sailors in distress. While every rescue matters, being distinguished for their courage and proficiency exemplifies the unwavering dedication of the crew members. At the Awards ceremony, Chief Officer Gennady Dubinin represented the Crown Sapphire team, receiving the prestigious award alongside Wallem Group's CEO Simon Doughty. Crown Sapphire operates under the ownership of NYK Reefers Ltd. and is managed by Wallem Ship Management, providing specialized reefer services through NYKCool AB. This recognition not only highlights the heroic actions of the crew but also serves as a testament to the values of teamwork and professionalism in the maritime industry.

Heroic Rescue: Reefer Savings Yacht Crew in Daring Ocean Drama

Mar 10, 2014 11:56

In a remarkable display of maritime bravery, two sailors were rescued by the 'Crown Sapphire' on March 8, 2014, after their 33-foot Swedish yacht named 'Bull' encountered life-threatening conditions approximately 100 nautical miles southwest of Bermuda. The ill-fated yacht, en route to St. George's from Florida, began flooding and activated its Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) around 3:45 p.m. In response, the container ship 'Crown Sapphire' altered its course to provide aid to the distressed vessel. The United States Coast Guard also sprang into action, deploying a C-130 aircraft equipped with life rafts for the rescue operation. Upon reaching the scene, the 'Crown Sapphire' was met with fierce winds and tumultuous seas, preventing the deployment of a lifeboat. Instead, the crew of the 'Bull' was advised to transfer into their liferaft, which was subsequently towed alongside the larger vessel. Fortunately, both sailors were brought aboard the 'Crown Sapphire' safely, using a cargo net to climb onto the ship’s deck, sustaining no serious injuries during the ordeal. This dramatic rescue highlights the significance of swift action and cooperation in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
