Seven Crew Members of the Cargo Ship 'Silves' Finally Receive Back Pay

Dec 07, 2012 22:27

After enduring an agonizing wait in Bremerhaven, the crew of the cargo vessel 'Silves' has at last been compensated for their hard work, receiving a total of €90,000 in unpaid wages. This payment comes from the Portuguese shipping company following the successful sale of its vessels. The crew, consisting of seven members, had not received any salaries since July 2012. After being detained on October 27, the situation took a further toll as they awaited resolution in Bremerhaven since August 27. The Russian officers among the crew were at the forefront of the legal battle, with their combined unpaid salaries reaching €45,000 over the same period since early July. As of December 8, some crew members are slated to embark on their journey home, although the timeline for the ship's return to service remains uncertain. Before the 'Silves' can set sail again, it is slated for necessary repairs at a nearby shipyard.

Seven Crew Members Left Stranded in Bremerhaven Amid Bankruptcy Crisis

Nov 07, 2012 09:54

The 'Silves,' which has been anchored in Bremerhaven since its arrival from Flushing on August 28, 2012, is now held in detention at Schifffahrts- und Speditionsgesellschaft Meyer in Kaiser Port due to the owner's bankruptcy. The situation of the seven-member crew remains uncertain, comprised of three Russian sailors and four from the Cape Verde Islands. These crew members currently lack permission to remain in Germany and can only move within city boundaries. They have reportedly not received their wages since August, totaling around 60,000 euros. Captain Tolpegin has been unable to establish contact with the ship’s owners, who have not responded to any calls or emails. The Seaman's Mission and Bremer Lloyd have stepped in to provide essential supplies for the stranded sailors. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has joined the effort to secure unpaid wages for the crew. A resolution may be on the horizon soon, potentially during the 45th week, as Naveiros Transportes Maritims S.A. plans to sell one of its vessels. Additionally, local authorities have confiscated the ship due to unpaid port fees since August.
