Houthi Missile Attack on 'Cyclades' Bulk Carrier in Red Sea

Apr 30, 2024 10:56

On April 29, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:20 p.m. Sanaa time, the Iranian-aligned Houthi forces launched an aggressive attack involving three anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBM) and three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting the bulk carrier 'Cyclades.' The ship, which was navigating the Red Sea en route from Djibouti to Jeddah, was approximately 54 nautical miles west of the Yemeni port of Mocha when the incident occurred. Fortunately, the 'Cyclades' experienced only minor damage due to an explosion that occurred nearby. Reports confirm there were no injuries among the crew, allowing the vessel to proceed on its journey without further interruption. A spokesperson from the Houthi Armed Forces claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting that the bulk carrier was specifically targeted due to its recent call at the Israeli port of Eilat on April 21. Earlier that same day, at 7:49 a.m., U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces acted decisively to neutralize one of the Houthi UAVs, which was on a flight path towards the USS 'Philippine Sea' and USS 'Laboon' stationed in the Red Sea. The U.S. forces reported no injuries or damage to U.S., coalition, or commercial vessels in the vicinity. This incident underscores ongoing maritime security challenges in the region.
