Ship Grounding Incident in Eo Estuary: The Case of the Daniel K.
On July 15, 2016, the cargo vessel 'Daniel K.', carrying 4,000 tons of paper pulp, experienced a grounding incident in the Eo estuary near Figueras. The ship had sourced its cargo from the Ence paper pulp factory located in Navia. Around 1:30 PM, during navigation through the Ribadeo channel, 'Daniel K.' became lodged in sand, complicating its passage. Despite various attempts to dislodge the vessel, it eventually had to wait until the next high tide, approximately 12 hours later, to be freed. A salvage operation was launched one hour prior to the noon high tide, utilizing the assistance of two tugs: 'F. Jaureguizar' from Gondán Figueirense shipyard and 'Sertosa 23' from San Ciprian in Lugo. While the complexity of the salvage was noted as minimal, the operation lasted around 45 minutes. By 1:45 PM, 'Daniel K.' successfully navigated past the Santos Bridge, continuing its journey towards Ceuta with an estimated time of arrival set for July 18. This grounding incident adds to the record of vessels stranded in the Eo estuary, the most recent prior case being the 'Kelly C.' on August 24, 2015.
