The delivery is part of a two-ship contract between PSI and Matson, further enhancing the maritime capabilities of one of America's leading shipping companies.

In a monumental event that marks a milestone in maritime history, Matson, Inc., a premier U.S. maritime carrier operating in the Pacific, alongside its partner Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), celebrated the christening of the largest container ship ever constructed in the United States. The ceremony took place at the Philly Shipyard on Saturday, June 30. The vessel, named ‘Daniel K. Inouye,’ pays tribute to the late senior U.S. Senator from Hawaii, known for his unwavering support of the maritime industry and its critical role in bolstering Hawaii’s economy. This remarkable ship is the first of two new additions to Matson’s fleet, with a combined construction cost of approximately $418 million, and is part of a larger plan to introduce four new vessels into Matson’s Hawaii service over the next two years. "Today is a day of immense pride for all of us at Matson," expressed Matt Cox, Matson's chairman and CEO, during the ceremony. He further noted, "In our 136 years of service, Matson's fleet has continually adapted—from sailing vessels to modern steamers and now to advanced diesel-powered ships—reflecting advancements in technology and the evolving needs of Hawaii’s growing economy."
