Drifting Dock Fragment Disrupts Shipping Traffic Near Bermuda
A sizable floating steel segment, suspected to be part of a floating dock, has become a navigational hazard for vessels near Bermuda after breaking free from the tug 'De Zhou'. This incident occurred while the De Zhou was on its route from the United States to the Canary Islands. Maritime authorities have issued warnings for nearby ships to remain vigilant as they navigate through the area. Although the specific origins of the floating sections remain unverified, they are thought to come from a floating dock that was previously owned by the Avondale Shipyard. Located on the Mississippi River, this dock was sold in the autumn of 2017 and subsequently towed by the 'De Zhou'. Unfortunately, the convoy encountered the powerful Hurricane Irma during its journey, which led to significant loss, leaving only half of the dock intact once the De Zhou arrived in the Canary Islands. The tug was last reported moored off Vega de San José at Las Palmas on June 9, 2018, at 12:15 p.m.
