Working Conditions Aboard the Decathlon

On May 29, 2019, a maritime incident unfolded when the Troon-based fishing vessel 'Progress' collided with the tanker 'Decathlon,' which was anchored in Ayr Bay. The fishing trawler, measuring 55.5 feet, was on its way to the fishing grounds when the unfortunate crash occurred. The RNLB 'Jim Moffat,' stationed in Troon, was promptly dispatched at 3:55 a.m., covering a distance of five miles to assist at the scene. Alongside the lifeboat, the Marine Protection Vessel 'Minna' was also sent to evaluate the situation. Thankfully, the 'Decathlon' remained unharmed in the incident. Fortunately, all six crew members aboard the 'Progress' escaped injury. Despite the extensive damage to the trawler, which necessitated a return to Troon under its own power, the lifeboat provided an escort to ensure their safe arrival. The RNLB 'Jim Moffat' finally returned to its station at 5:20 a.m. Upon inspection, it was determined that the 'Progress' must remain docked in Troon and await repairs from Alexander Noble & Son boat repairers in Girvan, with damages amounting to several thousand pounds. The collision caused significant harm to the bow, including the collapse of the metal mast and fractures to the bowrail and mountings. Following the incident, police conducted a breathalyzer test on the vessel's skipper, Keith Wilson, which returned a negative result. Meanwhile, the tanker 'Decathlon' successfully berthed in Las Palmas on June 7.
