Emergency Response as Yacht Gets Stuck Under Research Vessel in Table Bay

Nov 04, 2014 09:45

On November 1, 2014, at 4:47 p.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay was summoned by the Transnet National Ports Authority due to a Mayday distress call from the yacht 'Morning Wings.' This incident occurred within the confines of the Port of Table Bay, specifically along the Eastern Mole in Duncan Dock. The rescue vessel 'Spirit of Vodacom' was dispatched to the scene, and several nearby vessels rushed to assess the situation. Upon arrival, rescuers discovered the 6.5-meter yacht had been buffeted by fierce 45-knot South Easterly winds, becoming lodged between the quayside and the 'Top Estreda do Mar' research vessel. The strong winds posed a significant risk of pulling the yacht under the research vessel and quayside, causing further peril. Throughout the ordeal, the yacht sustained damage to its mast. The two crew members aboard 'Morning Wings' managed to safely evacuate to the quayside. One crewman, reportedly experiencing an asthma episode, left the scene in a private vehicle before rescue teams arrived. The lifeboat crew successfully established a tow-line to the distressed yacht, guiding it back into the safe waters of the Duncan Dock channel. They then secured the yacht to a safe mooring at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. Once safely moored, the crew carefully dismantled the damaged mast to prevent it from causing potential harm or damage to other nearby vessels. Initial assessments suggest that the yacht was caught in the intense winds that funneled through the port, leaving the skipper unable to maneuver the craft away from danger. Realizing the imminent threat of collision, the skipper issued a Mayday call, seeking assistance as the yacht was inevitably drawn toward the research vessel and quayside. Unfortunately, no other vessels were able to reach 'Morning Wings' in time to prevent the collision, which resulted in significant damage to the yacht.
