Tanker SN Federica Runs Aground in Galveston Fairway

Apr 02, 2015 11:09

On March 31, 2015, the oil tanker 'SN Federica', loaded with a staggering 17 million gallons of crude oil, ran aground in the Galveston Fairway, located 35 miles off the Texas coast. The vessel's master promptly alerted the Coast Guard about damage sustained to the forepeak, which resulted in water ingress. Fortunately, the Coast Guard later assessed the situation and found that the water was ballast water, confirming that there was no leak from the tanker. In response to the incident, the Coast Guard swiftly deployed teams from Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Texas City, Station Galveston, and Air Station Houston. Upon arrival, a marine casualty inspector and an investigating officer verified that the SN Federica was not taking on any oil and that there was no pollution resulting from the grounding. The crew executed their vessel response plan, commencing the evacuation of ballast water from the ship. At 10:32 p.m., the tanker was successfully refloated without any reported pollution or injuries. MSU Texas City monitored the situation and conducted a seaworthiness assessment while investigating the incident's cause. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port issued a directive to keep the vessel from entering federal waters until a comprehensive damage assessment, underwater hull survey, dive report, and ship's classification survey could confirm the SN Federica's seaworthiness.
