Dramatic Medivac Operation Off Durban Coast
On January 20, 2018, at approximately 08:19 a.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Elizabeth team received an urgent call for assistance regarding a medical evacuation. A 53-year-old male crew member from the Turkish vessel 'Lady Alalara' had sustained a dislocated left shoulder while at sea. The ship had initially departed from Durban and was headed towards Algoa Bay. In response to the situation, the NSRI deployed the rescue craft 'Spirit of Toft,' which was accompanied by a paramedic from the Eastern Cape Government Health EMS and a doctor. Upon reaching the vessel, located eight nautical miles offshore, the medical team boarded the 'Lady Alalara' to assess the injured crew member, who was experiencing significant pain and swelling. After providing the necessary medical attention, the patient was carefully secured in a Stokes basket stretcher and transferred onto the NSRI craft. The evacuation was executed smoothly, and the crew member was transported back to shore in a serious but stable condition. Upon arrival, he was quickly handed over to EMS personnel and taken to a hospital for further care. This operation highlights the essential role of the NSRI in maritime safety and emergency response.
