On October 7, 2013, a crew member aboard the bulk carrier "Anne Mette" required urgent medical attention after suffering injuries from a fall. In response, the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to facilitate the medevac near Adak, located approximately 200 miles southwest of the island. The rescue operation involved a coordinated effort where the Jayhawk helicopter successfully hoisted the injured 20-year-old crewman and transported him to an HC-130 Hercules airplane crewed by Air Station Kodiak personnel. The Hercules airplane then flew the individual to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, where he was promptly handed over to emergency medical services for advanced care. The alert for assistance was initiated when the Coast Guard Pacific Area command center received a request from the master of the "Anne Mette," highlighting the necessity for immediate medical support due to the crewman's multiple injuries. Given the remote location and challenging conditions—characterized by winds ranging from 17 to 34 mph and seas reaching heights of 9 feet—the Coast Guard launched a robust response. This included multiple aircraft: two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and two HC-130 Hercules airplanes, all manned by a total of 31 skilled aircrews alongside dedicated ground support teams.
