Recent investigations have uncovered significant meter-long cracks in the rudders of several newly constructed supertankers from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), raising concerns within the maritime industry. These defects, attributed to a potential design flaw, have prompted inspections of 35 supertankers to identify similar issues. The situation first came to light four months ago, during a routine assessment conducted by DHT Holdings on six of its supertankers still under warranty. It was during this examination that the alarming cracks were discovered in the helm of the DHT Jaguar, the lead vessel in a series of six identical supertankers delivered by HHI. Following this initial finding, similar defects were detected in two other vessels from the same series, specifically the DHT Jaguar and DHT Leopard, which are currently undergoing repairs. Meanwhile, the third tanker in that series remains under construction at the shipyard. Notably, HHI has constructed a total of 35 supertankers of this type, albeit with varying rudder designs. Consequently, all affected vessels are now slated for thorough inspections. Other companies, such as Gener8, Euronav, and Frontline, who also operate vessels of this type have been alerted to the potential issue. Various ship owners have initiated checks on their fleets, leading to a mix of findings; some vessels have been cleared of problems, while others have, unfortunately, identified the same concerning defects that require urgent repairs.
