Concerns Grow as Blacklisted Russian Tanker 'Dignity' is Seized in Egypt
The controversial Russian tanker 'Dignity' has been taken into custody in Egypt after neglecting to pay its tolls for traversing the Suez Canal. For over a month, the vessel has remained docked south of the canal while attempting to transit back from the Middle East on a ballast leg. The 'Dignity', which holds blacklisted status from the US, UK, and EU due to sanctions imposed in 2025, is currently stationary at coordinates 29° 50' N 032° 35' E as of November 3. The crew members aboard the 'Dignity' have made an urgent appeal for assistance amid their dire circumstances. Owned and managed by Argo Tanker Group from Russia since 2023, the tanker faced legal action from the Egyptian maritime agency, Sphinx, which accused the owner of failing to fulfill financial commitments owed to its local representatives. The Ismailia Economic Court subsequently ordered the precautionary seizure of the vessel in Suez until the owners settle all outstanding debts. The last inspection of the tanker was recorded in May 2023. It has faced scrutiny from the US for its role in the Russian oil trade and violations related to the G7 price cap on crude oil. Its port calls to Murmansk were significant enough to have it included in a U.S. sanctions package released in January 2025, with subsequent listings by the EU in July and by the UK in September. Adding to the urgency, the 22 Russian crew members filed a formal complaint on October 15, seeking unpaid wages dating back three months. As of October 28, they reported that no payment had been received. The Russian Union of Seafarers (SUR) had previously intervened in August, securing approximately $130,000 in back pay for the crew at that time. Currently, there are fears that in addition to unpaid wages, the vessel is running out of essential supplies such as fuel and lubricants, putting the ship’s power supply at risk. The SUR is actively monitoring the situation, hoping the owners will meet their responsibilities promptly.
Russian Oil Transfers Uncovered in Gulf of Oman
Recent investigations have revealed that sanctioned Russian oil was transferred in the Gulf of Oman, targeting delivery to the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery, located in Punjab and co-owned by Mittal Energy. The operation involved four sanctioned tankers, each having loaded oil in Murmansk: the 'Belgorod' (IMO: 9412359), 'Danshui' (IMO: 9589750), 'Dignity', and 'Primorye' (IMO: 9421960). All four vessels are on the sanction lists of the USA (OFAC), UK (OFSI), and EU. The receiving ship, 'Samadha' (IMO: 9286281), is managed by Seychelles-registered Erika Freight Ltd, known for ties to various dark fleet operations. Notably, the ship-to-ship (STS) transfer took place approximately 40 nautical miles east of Sohar, positioned outside Omani territorial waters. In a move to evade detection, the four tankers disabled their AIS transponders before entering the Gulf, while the 'Samadha' transmitted a misleading AIS signal depicting a fictitious route from India to Oman, avoiding contact with the Russian tankers. Between July and September, the estimated value of the four cargoes was around $280 million. The 'Samadha' faced sanctions from OFSI on October 15, 2025, following earlier sanctions from the EU on July 20, although it remains unsanctioned by OFAC thus far. Furthermore, sanctions records previously linked 'Samadha' to the NorthStandard P&I Association, although the details of any post-sanction insurance arrangements remain unclear. After conducting its operations, the 'Samadha' discharged its cargo at Mundra, situated on the Gujarati coast, which serves as the starting point of a 625-mile crude pipeline that leads to the Guru Gobind Singh refinery, a collaborative venture between Hindustan Petroleum Company and Mittal Energy Ltd. Notably, Lakshmi Mittal, the executive chairman of Arcelor Mittal, has recently decided to relinquish his UK residency for tax reasons, even as his company maintains significant steel and mining interests across the EU and the UK. Current AIS data indicates that the 'Samadha' is now cruising near Russia's Kola Peninsula, heading back to Murmansk.
