Cargo Ship Detained for Overloading in Brunsbüttel

Sep 08, 2017 18:39

On September 4, 2017, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the water police conducted an inspection of the cargo ship "Sky Vita" in the Kiel Canal locks at Brunsbüttel. The vessel, which was making its way from Södertalje to Motril with an estimated time of arrival on September 12, was found to be overloaded. During the inspection, it was discovered that the ship's loading marks were submerged, indicating a draught that exceeded the allowed limit by 6.5 centimeters, totaling an excess weight of about 68 tons. As a result, local authorities detained the "Sky Vita," which subsequently anchored at New Western Neufeld Roads on the Elbe River. To rectify the situation, the crew pumped out ballast water, successfully reducing the draught by three centimeters. Additionally, the crew discharged 12 tons of sewage water at sea to comply with maritime regulations. The vessel was cleared and released at 2:25 p.m. Following the incident, the Latvian captain faced potential penalties and was required to pay a safety deposit of 1,300 euros.
