AMSA Aids Injured Sailor during Five-Day Rescue Operation in Indian Ocean

Nov 19, 2020 12:05

In a remarkable display of maritime coordination, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) provided critical medical assistance to an injured crew member aboard the 'Dolfijngracht' over a five-day period in the Indian Ocean. The ordeal began on the evening of November 14, 2020, when the vessel, approximately 1,000 nautical miles from Western Australia and en route from Durban, raised an alarm after a crew member suffered severe burns due to an onboard accident. To address this urgent medical situation, AMSA's emergency response center in Canberra sprang into action, orchestrating a response involving both defense and civilian agencies. A Challenger patrol aircraft was dispatched from Perth, tasked with air-dropping essential medical supplies to the freighter. Additionally, AMSA established a telemedicine link to monitor the injured sailor's condition, ensuring he received timely advice and support. Recognizing the critical nature of the incident, AMSA sought assistance from the Australian Defence Force, which subsequently engaged the Royal Australian Navy for a ship-to-ship medical evacuation strategy. On November 17, a medical team from the Royal Australian Navy, comprised of two doctors, one nurse, and three support personnel, boarded the submarine intervention ship Besant, a specialized vessel operated by a private contractor for the RAN. Later that same day, the naval team successfully rendezvoused with the 'Dolfijngracht', boarding the freighter to provide much-needed medical care as the vessel made its way to port. Finally, on November 18, the 'Dolfijngracht' docked in Fremantle, where the injured sailor was swiftly transferred to shore and subsequently taken to a hospital for further treatment. Following the completion of this critical mission, the freighter has since set sail for the port of Portland, with an estimated time of arrival on November 23. Heroic Rescue: US Coast Guard Saves Ocean Rower Niall Macdonald 530 Miles Off Cape Cod

Jun 18, 2018 10:13

In a dramatic incident on June 15, 2018, the United States Coast Guard successfully coordinated the rescue of Niall Macdonald, who was aboard his ocean rowboat named "Alba". The rescue operation kicked off when Macdonald activated his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) approximately 530 miles off the coast of Cape Cod at around 12:30 a.m., signaling distress. With limited connectivity, Macdonald utilized a satellite phone to communicate with watchstanders at the United Kingdom Mission Control Center, informing them that he had been battling rough seas for the previous 36 hours, which caused his boat to begin taking on water. He had to make the tough decision to abandon the rower and take refuge in his life raft. The situation escalated quickly, prompting watchstanders from the First Coast Guard District based in Boston to work closely with the UK Mission Control Center to relay essential satellite phone messages. As part of the emergency response, the Coast Guard issued an urgent marine bulletin to nearby vessels requesting immediate assistance. They also coordinated with the Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Canada, leading to the deployment of a Canadian C-130 aircraft to aid in the rescue due to the considerable distance from shore. Additionally, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Rome was contacted to redirect the Italian Naval warship "Alpino" toward the scene; however, it was located 80 miles away. Fortunately, the Dutch freighter "Dolfijngracht" responded to the marine broadcast and arrived on the scene at 5 a.m., finally locating Macdonald in his life raft. Despite the grueling conditions—with 10-foot waves and winds blowing at 26 knots—Macdonald was found weary but stable. Thanks to the remarkable international collaboration between the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands, Macdonald’s life was saved. He was subsequently transported to the next port of call, Escoumins, Canada. During his harrowing experience at sea, Macdonald was well-equipped with safety gear, including an EPIRB, personal locator beacon, satellite phone, VHF radio, navigation lights, flares, an immersion suit, life jacket, and a transportable survival kit. This incident shines a light on the importance of preparation and the effectiveness of international maritime rescue operations.
