Tragic Discovery: Body of Missing Skipper Recovered Off Cape Finisterre

Apr 17, 2024 20:30

On April 17, 2024, at 8 a.m., Salvamento Marítimo received an urgent call regarding the disappearance of Philippe Benoiton, a 63-year-old seasoned sailor and skipper of the yacht 'JPK 960 Philauvent-Passecoque' (MMSI: 227613780). Benoiton was participating in the renowned 'Sailing Race Cap Martinique,' having set off from La Trinité-sur-Mer, France, en route to Fort-de-France, Martinique. The previous night, on April 16, adverse weather conditions with strong northwestern winds led to his vanishing approximately west of Cape Finisterre. The regatta organizer had not received any communication from Benoiton, raising concerns as the yacht's GPS indicated reduced course and speed. At 7:40 a.m., fellow competitors Yann Gindre and Michel Foucart aboard 'L'Opale - A Chacun son Everest' located the yacht but could not confirm Benoiton's presence on board. The CCS Fisterra promptly orchestrated a search and rescue operation, deploying the 'Don Inda' alongside helicopters Helimer 401, Helimer 402, Pesca 1, and the Sasemar 102 aircraft. By 9:19 a.m., the auxiliary vessel of 'Don Inda' discovered the yacht adrift, the engine still running and the tiller damaged. Unfortunately, it was confirmed that Benoiton was not aboard. The yacht was subsequently towed to the port of Cee in A Coruña. Tragedy struck when the Pesca I helicopter located Benoiton's body five nautical miles southwest of Cabo Fisterra. Rescuers recovered the remains, which were then transported to Vigo airport, where the National Police awaited. This coordinated response effort was led by the RCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Fisterra.
