Caterpillar Marine Power Systems has proudly announced the completion of a cutting-edge repower project for the Dredge Wheeler, marking a significant upgrade for the iconic vessel. As the largest hopper dredge within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers fleet, the Dredge Wheeler is equipped with 2x Cat® C280-16 marine engines, each delivering an impressive 4600 bkW at 900 rpm for robust propulsion. Additionally, the dredge is powered by 2x Cat 280-12 propulsion engines, which provide 3700 bkW at 1000 rpm, crucial for operating its variable speed dredge generators. On April 3, the dredger 'Wheeler' experienced significant structural damage following a collision with the 'Carnival Triumph' in Mobile, Alabama. The incident occurred when the cruise ship broke loose from its moorings due to strong winds. Preliminary evaluations indicate that the majority of the damage was confined to the housing area, with specific issues such as cracked frames, damaged plating, and compromised handrails being noted. Fortunately, initial reports suggest that the hull remains intact and unharmed. To confirm the integrity of the vessel, a dive team is scheduled to conduct a thorough perimeter inspection on April 16. Following the assessments, the 'Wheeler' is expected to resume dredging operations in the lower Mississippi River in May. However, before the dredger can return to service, the U.S. Coast Guard has mandated necessary structural repairs to ensure its seaworthiness. Efforts will be made to expedite repairs within the available timeframe, although such work may lead to a delay in the dredging schedule by a few weeks.
