Maersk Reroutes Ships Around Cape of Good Hope Amid Red Sea Tensions
In response to escalating attacks by the Houthi militia in the Red Sea, Maersk has made the strategic decision to redirect four of its container vessels on a longer route to Asia. The ships set to navigate this new path include the 'Maersk Genoa', 'Maersk Londrina', 'Ebba Maersk', and 'Gjertrud Maersk', all of which have been stationed south of the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah, facing the threat from Yemen-based attacks. These vessels will make their journey around the Cape of Good Hope, effectively bypassing the Suez Canal to avoid potential dangers. A fifth vessel, the 'Maersk Utah', is currently in the region but has not been rerouted; however, the company has confirmed that it will not transit close to Yemen. This proactive measure underscores Maersk's commitment to ensuring the safety of its fleet and the integrity of its shipping operations amid growing regional instability.
Container Ship 'Ebba Maersk' Faces Double Loss of MOB Boat
On July 17, 2015, the container vessel 'Ebba Maersk' experienced an unusual incident when it lost a man overboard (MOB) boat at 9:15 a.m. in the anchorage area of Schouwenbank. The situation was quickly managed by the pilot boat 'Pollux,' which secured the drifting MOB boat until the KNRM lifeboat 'Dorus Rijkers' arrived for assistance. The lifeboat managed to secure the MOB boat and subsequently transferred it back to the 'Ebba Maersk' using a line. While the KNRM station Stellendam's 'Neeltje Jans' was also on alert, it managed to return to its station before reaching the scene. The crew of the 'Ebba Maersk' opted to wait for more favorable weather conditions before reclaiming the MOB boat. Shortly after the 'Dorus Rijkers' returned to its station, the Coast Guard center alerted the KNRM once again—the MOB boat from 'Ebba Maersk' had slipped away for a second time. After discussing the situation, it was determined that the lifeboat 'Antoinette' from the KNRM station Stellendam would be dispatched to recover the boat and transport it to Stellendam port. Following these events, the 'Ebba Maersk' successfully docked at the PSA Deurganck Terminal in Antwerp on July 18 at 9:30 a.m. and set sail once again on the morning of July 20, heading towards Suez.
