Gas-Powered Ship Averted Catastrophe After Bridge Collision

Apr 19, 2016 20:46

On the night of April 18, 2016, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the gas-powered tanker 'Greenstream' (IMO number: 02335315, 2870 tons) encountered a near disaster when it allided with the central arch of the Schweich road bridge spanning the Mosel River. The incident resulted in considerable damage to the port side of the vessel, with structural deformation extending over a length of roughly 40 meters. Critical pipes on the main deck, which are integral to the ship's gas management, were severely compromised by the impact with the bridge. Fortunately, due to a stroke of luck, there was no leakage of the propellant gas, averting a potentially devastating explosion. The collision also caused significant concrete damage to the central arch of the Mosel bridge, prompting an inspection by the State Office for Mobility. Thankfully, the assessment indicated that the bridge's stability remained intact, thereby allowing both vehicle and vessel traffic to continue unimpeded. Following the incident, the Water Police in Trier held the 'Greenstream' until it was deemed seaworthy. Subsequently, on May 4, the ship was brought to the Gebr. Kooiman B.V. repair facility located in the Zwin Port of Zwijndrecht for necessary repairs. In a significant advancement for the inland shipping sector, Shell has introduced two fully liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered tankers to operate the route between Rotterdam and Basel. This move marks a pivotal moment not just for Shell in the Netherlands, but for the entire inland shipping industry. The first of these green vessels, named Greenstream, was meticulously constructed at Peters Shipyards in the Netherlands. Its operations will be overseen by Interstream Barging (ISB), a company based in the Netherlands. The launch of Greenstream is part of Shell's commitment to sustainability, and it represents the first of two LNG-powered barges that the company plans to charter for this vital shipping corridor.
