Edith Maersk Innovates Sustainability with Gothenburg Fuel Switch Initiative
On January 24, the container vessel 'Edith Maersk' made a significant impact at the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, as it became the pioneer vessel of Maersk Line to participate in the innovative Fuel Switch Program. This proactive initiative aims to cut sulphur emissions in the vicinity of Gothenburg by an impressive 90% within the designated port control area. As part of this commitment, all Maersk Line vessels arriving at the port on a weekly schedule will transition to low-sulphur marine diesel oil, with sulphur content reduced to less than 0.1%. These vessels are part of direct service routes to Asian destinations, including Malaysia and China. In addition, starting February, Maersk Line will implement the switch to low-sulphur fuel for all its container ships while docked at the Port of Virginia, USA. This strategic move is anticipated to enhance air quality in the broader Hampton Roads region by significantly lowering emissions of sulphur, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
Historic Arrival of the Largest Ship at Antwerp Port
On January 13, 2012, at 6:30 p.m., the Port of Antwerp was poised to welcome the largest vessel ever to dock there, the 'Edith Maersk.' Scheduled to arrive at the terminal as part of an important trial run, the 'Edith Maersk' is among the most colossal container ships globally, following a previously canceled visit from its sister ship, the 'Evelyn Maersk,' due to adverse weather conditions. Authorities had unanimously approved the arrival, seeing this as a significant milestone for the port. The massive ship was sighted off the Wandelaar pilot station at 11 a.m. and reported a draft of 14.15 meters. This trial docking was accompanied by a thorough safety assessment, highlighting the involvement of a select group of Flemish and Dutch observers from the Joint Nautical Authority of Scheldt and Dutch Pilots. As 4 tugs were mobilized from Bath in preparation, the 'Edith Maersk' was set to make its grand entrance at the PSA terminal around 6:30 p.m. This remarkable vessel not only extended the port's length record by nearly 30 meters but also made history by transporting a staggering 15,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
