Duluth-Superior Kicks Off 2016 Shipping Season with Iconic Departures
The 2016 commercial shipping season has officially commenced at the Port of Duluth-Superior, the most inland port within the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway (GLSLS) system. On Tuesday, March 22, the first two U.S.-flag lakers plan to depart, marking an exciting milestone for the region. At approximately 7 a.m., the Edwin H. Gott will leave its winter berth at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. After a refueling stop, it is expected to sail beneath Duluth’s celebrated Aerial Bridge. The ship will head to the CN Dock in Two Harbors to load iron ore pellets. Following closely, the Philip R. Clark from the Great Lakes Fleet will also refuel before journeying to Two Harbors. Both vessels are slated to deliver crucial shipments to steel mills located on the Lower Lakes. Following their loading activities, they will navigate across Lake Superior toward Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to position themselves in the downbound queue awaiting the opening of the Soo Locks at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, March 25. Additionally, the Welland Canal opened its gates at 8 a.m. today, while the Montreal/Lake Ontario section of the St. Lawrence Seaway is set to welcome traffic on Wednesday.
Coast Guard Performs Urgent Medevac off Bayfield
On August 31, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard executed a critical medical evacuation of a crewmember from the bulk carrier 'Edwin H. Gott,' situated approximately 40 miles northwest of Bayfield, Wisconsin, in Lake Superior. At around 8 a.m. CST, the distress signal was received via VHF-FM channel 16 at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, reporting that a 60-year-old crew member was exhibiting stroke-like symptoms. The captain of the laker informed the Coast Guard that the man's health was rapidly declining in the early hours of the morning. In response, SAR coordinators at Sector Sault Ste. Marie mobilized a boatcrew from Station Bayfield, dispatching a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. Discussing the severity of the situation, the on-call Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended proceeding with the medical evacuation. The boatcrew arrived at the scene around 9:20 a.m., coordinating effectively with the laker's crew to facilitate the transfer of the ill crewmember. Utilizing a crane, the crew lowered the patient into a rescue basket, enabling a safe transfer to the Coast Guard vessel. Once aboard, the boatcrew, which included two emergency medical technicians, administered necessary medical care while navigating back to shore. They arrived at Station Bayfield at 10:45 a.m., where local emergency medical services were ready and waiting to take over. The patient was then transferred to Ashland Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. This operation underscores the critical response capabilities of the Coast Guard in maritime emergencies.
