Lifeboats Assist Eems Cobalt in Perilous Situation Off Lunan Bay
On the night of November 26, 2021, at 11:30 p.m., the Montrose Lifeboat was called into action to provide assistance to the vessel 'Eems Cobalt' (IMO: 9867432), which was in distress due to dragging its anchor and facing the risk of running aground near the southern end of Lunan Bay. Despite encountering challenging rough weather conditions, the Montrose Lifeboat swiftly proceeded to the emergency location. Upon arrival, the crew conducted a thorough inspection of the port side of the Eems Cobalt, assessing for any potential damage. Shortly thereafter, the Arbroath Lifeboat also arrived on the scene and performed a similar inspection on the starboard side. Fortunately, no damage was detected on either side, although the vessel was only able to maintain a speed of two knots under the conditions. To ensure the safety of the Eems Cobalt, a decision was made to escort her to calmer waters, approximately four miles from the shore. Once safely relocated, both lifeboats were stood down from duty and began their return. The Montrose Lifeboat made its way back to its station, with the Arbroath Lifeboat opting to accompany her to navigate better conditions for a safe entry into Arbroath. After successfully maneuvering through the challenging harbor entrance, both lifeboats returned to the Montrose Lifeboat Station at 3:30 a.m. on November 27, 2021.

The 40-year-old officer’s decision to make a sharp starboard turn led to the accident as the 'Eems Cobalt' was approaching from the south.
