Stranded Freighter Eems Traveller Towed to Safety in Brest

Dec 08, 2017 09:28

On December 7, 2017, at 11:14 a.m., the freighter Eems Traveller, navigating from Gijon to Rotterdam with a cargo of 2,000 tons of steel plates and carrying a crew of seven, reported a critical engine failure to CROSS Corsen while 18 miles off the coast of Ouessant. As the vessel began to drift perilously close to the rocky shores of Portsall, located just 15 miles away, the crew attempted to address the propulsion issues. In response to the distress signal, the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic dispatched the emergency tug Abeille Bourbon at 12:10 p.m., positioning it near the disabled ship. Notably, the tug had been strategically pre-positioned in anticipation of adverse weather conditions after a reinforced alert was issued in Camaret the day before at 3:45 p.m. By 12:50 p.m., the crew of Eems Traveller acknowledged their inability to rectify the engine failure, prompting the vessel's owner to contract Abeilles International for towing assistance. Despite facing challenging weather characterized by winds reaching seven Beaufort and significant swell, the Abeille Bourbon successfully took Eems Traveller in tow at 3:42 p.m. The rescue operation proved effective, as the convoy reached the port of Brest by 12:15 a.m. on December 8, where the freighter was securely berthed at Quay Armand Considère to undergo the necessary repairs. Following successful maintenance, Eems Traveller departed the commercial port bound for Gorinchem on January 11 at 7:15 p.m., with an expected arrival on January 14. Engine Malfunction Strands Eems Traveller in Kiel Canal Lock

Nov 18, 2016 09:07

On November 17, 2016, at 9:30 PM, the cargo vessel Eems Traveller encountered an engine malfunction while navigating the Kiel Canal locks in Kiel-Holtenau. This incident occurred during its journey from Szczecin to Hamburg, causing the vessel to become temporarily stranded perpendicular to the lock chamber, preventing its berthing at the designated North quay. Fortunately, no damages were reported as a result of this incident. Local authorities, including police personnel, boarded the vessel to conduct an investigation. By 11:10 PM, the Eems Traveller was cleared to continue its voyage. After a brief halt at the Voith Quay located in the North Port of Kiel, the ship proceeded through the Kiel Canal and eventually anchored at the South Anchorage off Brunsbüttel on November 18 at 11:30 AM. Later that night, just before midnight, it successfully docked at the oil mill in the Neuhöfer Canal.
