In the early hours of September 22, 2019, at approximately 1 a.m., a distressing incident unfolded involving the crew aboard the 'EF Eldra', a vessel anchored at coordinates 02:32.44S – 080:05.72W, roughly 4 miles WNW of Isla Escalante, Ecuador. During routine radio checks, the Officer of the Watch (OOW) noted an alarming absence of response from the duty crew. Subsequent investigations uncovered a harrowing event where both crew members were assaulted and bound by intruders. Reports indicated that seven armed individuals, wielding a shotgun, forcibly boarded the ship, took the crew hostage, and unlawfully confiscated personal belongings and communication equipment before making their escape. Following the attack, the 'EF Eldra' proceeded to the Posorja roads, where a team from the Coastguard and anti-narcotics police conducted a thorough search of the vessel. After ensuring the safety and security of the ship, it was cleared to continue its journey.
