The maritime community is mourning the loss of Asier Akordarrementeria, a fisherman hailing from Lekeitio, whose remains have been transported to Dakar after a tragic incident at sea. The fishing vessel 'Egaluze,' which had been anchored off the coast of Dakar, underwent a thorough inspection by local authorities before being granted permission to dock on May 28, 2026. Akordarrementeria passed away due to a non-traumatic cause on May 22 while the ship was navigating Senegalese waters. His body has been preserved in the refrigerated hold of the 'Egaluze' for over a week. Following the completion of an autopsy, the repatriation process for his remains will commence as the community honors his memory.
