Urgent Medevac Operation Near Cold Bay, Alaska

Oct 21, 2017 12:46

On the evening of October 19, 2017, a dramatic medical evacuation unfolded off the coast of Cold Bay, Alaska, as a crew member aboard the 'Delsa' required immediate assistance. The Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak's MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was deployed from Cold Bay after a distress call was received at 7:30 p.m. from the vessel's captain. The call reported that a 42-year-old man had fallen 20 feet from scaffolding, suffering potential back and hip injuries. In a swift response, the Coast Guard Communications Detachment Kodiak alerted the District 17 command center, where watchstanders activated the on-call flight surgeon. Following the surgeon’s guidance, the Jayhawk crew prepared for takeoff to provide urgent care. Upon reaching the scene, Chief Petty Officer Matt Laub, an experienced aviation survival technician, was lowered onto the Delsa's top deck with a rescue litter. He navigated through the ship's narrow staircase, aided by the crew, to access the injured man located in the cargo hold. After stabilizing the individual on the rescue litter, Laub efficiently coordinated a hoist operation using the helicopter’s 150-foot winch. By 10:45 p.m., the victim was successfully hoisted and transferred to the Jayhawk, which then transported him to Cold Bay. There, he was handed over to commercial medical services for transfer to Anchorage, Alaska, for further medical treatment. The situation was aided by favorable weather conditions at the time of the operation, including clear skies, winds of 11 mph, and seven-foot seas. This effective medevac highlights the Coast Guard's swift and dedicated response capabilities in emergency maritime situations.
