On March 16, 2022, the tanker 'Ekmen' was escorted from the territorial waters of Liberia after a month-long stay at the port of Buchanan. The vessel was carrying 293 bags of ammonium nitrate mixed with heavy fuel oil (HFO), which raised significant alarms from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This mixture was deemed highly hazardous, prompting urgent action by state security forces. The cargo, which was originally destined for Bea Mining Corporation, was rejected upon discovery of the HFO contamination. The EPA, led by Executive Director Prof. Wilson Tarpeh, confirmed the presence of these dangerous materials following reports from field agents at the port.
