Tugboat El Lobo Grande II Successfully Refloats Grounded Barge Defiant Near Castillo San Felipe
In a remarkable salvage operation, the tugboat 'El Lobo Grande II' has successfully refloated the barge 'Defiant', which had found itself stranded on rocks off the coast of Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The incident occurred on February 25, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m. when the barge broke free from its towing vessel, the tug 'Storm' (IMO: 9403358). The salvage efforts, executed by teams from Donjon-SMIT, were highly intricate and demanded significant technical skill. Preparations involved strategically positioning three tugs and meticulously pressurizing cargo tanks, empty spaces, and compartments within the barge to facilitate the refloating process. With the help of the incoming tide, the tug 'El Lobo Grande II' managed to dislodge the barge from its rocky confinement. Following the successful refloating, salvage teams, alongside Unified Command responders, conducted a thorough assessment of the barge's condition. Their evaluation confirmed that the barge was stable, adequately floating, and maintaining constant pressure, which led to the Port Captain granting approval for the vessel to continue its transit. Throughout this operation, the Coast Guard and partnering agencies established a 500-yard safety zone to ensure the safety of the transit route within the Port of San Juan. The barge 'Defiant' reached its destination at Pier 16 safely at 4 a.m., with assistance from the tug 'Don Alfredo' (IMO: 9314739). Following the successful operation, the Port of San Juan has responsibly resumed normal maritime operations and is fully open to traffic.
