In a remarkable feat for maritime logistics, the Eleonora Maersk container ship, capable of carrying 15,500 TEU, set a new draught record at the port of Antwerp on Thursday morning, achieving an impressive depth of 15.65 meters. This accomplishment surpasses the former record of 15.50 meters, reinforcing Antwerp's status as a leading hub for the world's largest container vessels. The Eleonora Maersk docked in the Deurganck basin, where there have been over 5,000 container movements, including 4,300 successful unloading operations. The ship is scheduled to depart from the port at approximately 14:00, destined for Bremerhaven.

On October 23, 2014, a fishing vessel carrying more than 200 migrants found itself in dire straits 285 miles southeast of Malta, prompting a rescue operation. The Maltese Rescue Coordination Centre quickly reacted to the emergency, diverting the 'Eleonora Maersk,' a cargo ship en route from Tanjung Pelepas to Rotterdam, to assess the situation. Due to deteriorating weather conditions, characterized by winds reaching force 6-7 on the Beaufort scale, the migrants were taken on board the 'Eleonora Maersk.' While the ship began its journey northwest towards Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta’s Maritime Squadron was prepared to assist in transferring the migrants at Hay Wharf Base. However, when the time came to disembark, the migrants expressed their refusal to go to Malta, insisting instead on being taken to Italy. After negotiations with Italian authorities, it was decided that the migrants would be safely disembarked at an Italian port. Consequently, the 'Eleonora Maersk' continued northward, with all the migrants still on board, ensuring their request was honored.
