On April 16, 2026, the measures taken by the Palermo Coast Guard resulted in the detention of the roll-on/roll-off (roro) vessel 'Elisabeth Russ' due to significant safety concerns. An inspection initiated after the ship docked at the bustling port unveiled a series of alarming deficiencies, compelling authorities to impose an administrative detention until the vessel's issues were comprehensively rectified. This incident marked the third vessel detained this year by the Western Sicily Maritime Directorate. The crew aboard the 'Elisabeth Russ,' predominantly consisting of Polish and Romanian nationals, faced scrutiny as multiple shortcomings in emergency response protocols were uncovered, particularly in the area of firefighting procedures which had not been correctly implemented. In addition to these procedural failures, critical safety equipment was found to be either inoperable or obstructed by cargo, coupled with an evident lack of maintenance of lifesaving apparatus essential for safe operations at sea. The roro vessel could not set sail until it met the minimum safety standards as mandated by international maritime conventions. Following the rectification of the highlighted irregularities and subsequent approval from maritime authorities, 'Elisabeth Russ' was finally permitted to depart from Palermo on April 20, charting a course towards Valletta where she arrived safely on April 21.

On March 9, 2022, the vessel 'Elisabeth Russ' encountered significant operational difficulties while navigating the Mediterranean Sea, leading to a loss of propulsion and a temporary drift. The ship, which was making its way from Palermo to Genova, promptly reported the issue to the Gabinete de Investigação de Acidentes Marítimos e da Autoridade para a Meteorologia Aeronáutica (GAMA) in Lisbon. After successfully docking in Genova at 7 a.m. on March 10, the 'Elisabeth Russ' later departed for Valletta on March 12 at 8:35 p.m., with an expected arrival date of March 14. The GAMA has initiated a thorough investigation to gather evidence for analysis and has informed the European Commission through the EMCIP platform. Fortunately, there were no injuries or environmental pollution linked to this incident.
