On March 21, 2018, a crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak successfully executed a medevac mission for a 42-year-old man aboard the bulk carrier 'Elpida GR', approximately 65 miles southeast of Cold Bay, Alaska. The sequence of events began on the evening of March 20 when watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center received an urgent medevac request from Alaska Vessel Agent, indicating that the individual was experiencing severe gastrointestinal distress. In response, the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon advised that a medevac was necessary. A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, which had already been forward deployed on the Coast Guard Cutter 'Stratton', was dispatched. The aircraft had left the Cutter earlier that morning to position itself closer to Cold Bay. As the 'Elpida GR' made its approach from Portland, Oregon, the helicopter crew successfully hoisted the man on board. He was then flown back to Cold Bay and transferred to a commercial air ambulance for further medical treatment.
