Crowley Maritime Takes the Helm of Four Jones Act Vessels for Pasha Group
In a significant development for the maritime industry, Crowley Maritime Corporation has secured a new contract with Sunrise Operations LLC, a subsidiary of The Pasha Group based in San Rafael, California. This partnership involves the comprehensive management of four Jones Act ships that operate between the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii. The move comes on the heels of Pasha Hawaii's recent announcement that it will take over the Hawaii business operations of Horizon Lines, which includes these four U.S.-flagged container vessels. Mike Golonka, Crowley’s Vice President of Ship Management, expressed confidence in their ability to manage these vessels effectively, stating, "As a long-time Jones Act carrier, Crowley is well-suited to manage these U.S.-flagged vessels. Our extensive resources and adaptive operational model distinguish us in this field, alongside our proven history of managing steam vessels for various clients. We look forward to collaborating with Pasha on the management of their new fleet." Under this contract, Crowley will oversee ship management for the Horizon Enterprise, Horizon Pacific, Horizon Reliance, and Horizon Spirit. The company is committed to delivering a tailored suite of crewing and technical management services, similar to those it provides for other container ships globally, including those in different Jones Act trades. This partnership highlights Crowley's extensive expertise in maritime operations and reinforces its commitment to excellence in ship management.
Rescue at Sea: Container Ship Aids Crew of Distressed Yacht
On April 14, 2015, at 8:39 a.m., the vigilant watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay received an alarming notification from the crew of the container ship 'Horizon Enterprise,' who spotted an orange smoke flare in the distance. Acting swiftly, the crew of 'Horizon Enterprise' identified a man aboard a 30-foot yellow-and-white sailing vessel, roughly 24 miles northwest of Fort Bragg, desperately waving his arms and signaling for help. In response, the Coast Guard promptly dispatched a rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Noyo River, along with an aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay. By 9:54 a.m., the aerial rescue team pinpointed the location of the distressed sailboat, which was carrying a 13-year-old boy and a 48-year-old man. The aircrew cleverly lowered a radio to establish communication with the vessel's operator, who had been unable to use his own radio after sustaining injuries to his leg and hip the previous evening. Upon the arrival of the rescue boatcrew, both individuals were safely transferred aboard the vessel and transported back to Fort Bragg, where emergency medical services awaited to provide assistance. Additionally, a second motor lifeboat crew from Station Noyo River was deployed to tow the abandoned sailing vessel back to shore.
