In a recent ruling, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal has postponed the appeal proceedings of ten pirates sentenced to life in prison and deportation for the hijacking of the MV Arrilah-I. The hearing is now set for November 5. As part of the case, the court mandated the confiscation of all weaponry and ammunition utilized during the hijacking incident. This group of pirates was captured in April of the previous year by the UAE’s Anti-Terrorist Special Forces with assistance from the US Fifth Fleet, which successfully secured the release of the ship and its crew. In a gripping legal development, the defense attorney for ten Somali men involved in the hijacking of the cargo ship 'Arrilah' has asserted that his clients were coerced into their actions under threat of death. According to lawyer Mr. Al Othali, the men were approached with job opportunities at sea, only to find themselves under the command of an Iranian national, Abdulmajeed, who allegedly intimidated them into participating in the hijacking operation. Upon encountering the 'Arrilah', the men reportedly faced a grave ultimatum: comply or face fatal consequences. The defense emphasizes that the defendants had no intention of harming the crew, noting that evidence suggests they were poorly informed about their assignments. The case took place in the Federal Court, where Mr. Al Othali argued that if the accused had truly aimed to capture hostages, they would have used more formidable weaponry, such as the light arms and RPGs mentioned in the court documents. He pointed out that the crew had hidden in the engine room, making their identification of the assailants impossible. Adding to the complexity, the defense criticized the absence of a medical report regarding injuries claimed by the crew of the 'Arrilah', as well as the failure to recover the ship's capsule—similar to an airplane’s black box—that could have provided crucial insights into the events of the hijacking. The 'Arrilah' was hijacked in April 2011 while navigating the Arabian Sea, east of Oman, during its journey from Australia to Jebel Ali. Counter-terrorism forces intervened to reclaim the ship shortly after the takeover. The court is set to announce its decision on the matter on May 22, 2012.

The crew of the 'Arrilah 1' recounted their terrifying experience, revealing that they had barricaded themselves in a fortified ground floor cell within the engine room. This strategic decision ultimately prevented the assailants from taking them hostage. Despite the pirates resorting to extreme tactics—including tossing hand grenades, firing indiscriminately, and even attempting to set the ship's engine ablaze to disrupt oxygen flow—the crew's resolve allowed them to withstand the assault until help arrived.
