Hamburg Süd Commemorates Historic Ship Christening in San Francisco
In a significant milestone for its 142-year history, Hamburg Süd, the renowned German shipping company, proudly marked the christening of the 'Cap Corrientes' in the United States. The ceremonial event took place on August 23 at the iconic Pier 35 in the Port of San Francisco, coinciding with the port's 150th anniversary, a fitting tribute given Hamburg Süd's longstanding relationship with this vital hub of maritime trade. This new vessel, capable of carrying 3,800 TEU and weighing 51,000 dwt, is set to enhance the company’s service between California and the South Pacific, specifically Australia and New Zealand. Hamburg Süd began its regular liner services to California in 1957 and pioneered the introduction of container ships with increased reefer capacity between the East and West Coasts of the U.S. and Oceania during the early 1970s. The 'Cap Corrientes' was constructed by Taizhou Catic Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Ltd in China and is owned by Vilmaris Management GmbH from Hamburg, Germany, and is currently under a long-term charter with Hamburg Süd.
